THE RAIZAL TREASURE

The queen conch ( Lobatus gigas ) is a mollusk of great importance to the island culture of the Caribbean Sea. Thanks to its striking pearl, its large shell, and its abundant meat, this snail has been coveted by fishermen throughout the Caribbean Sea, leading to its extinction in the continental Caribbean. Therefore, its island population became crucial to ensuring its survival.

In the Colombian Caribbean, two sister companies, Sepia ROV and BetterThings, have formed a team of biologists, fishermen, sailors, and designers focused on assessing the status of the snail's populations on different keys in the SeaFlower Biosphere Reserve. The goal is to promote its conservation, comply with fishing bans, protect this fishery resource, deeply rooted in Raizal culture, and fight illegal fishing from neighboring countries.
